Objectives (course unit)

The student
- is able to guide the surgical patient in the pre- and postoperative phases
- is able to care for the surgical wound and guide the patient in the treatment of the wound
- is able to make various wound dressings and supportive slings
- is able to plan, implement and assess the patient's parenteral nutrition
- is able to apply the principles of aseptics and promote patient safety

- surgical wound care
- surgical dressings and supportive slings
- parenteral nutrition and fluid therapy for a surgical patient
- care of a tracheostomised patient

Prerequisites (course unit)

First year studies 50 ects completed, including the course on Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations.
Participation in the courses on Surgical Nursing and Intravenous Fluid Therapy and Blood Transfusion.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail (course unit)

Pass
The student
- is able to plan and implement surgical nursing safely
- works professionally and ethically

Fail
The student
- puts patient safety at risk

Tamk Kuntokatu 4, Skills Center, (online connections in case of pandemic restrictions)

Assessment methods and criteria

Evaluation passed/failed.
100 % active participation.
To pass this course a student should:
- participate in all three meetings, 100% participation
- being an active participant and take part in all activities and given tasks within the given timeframes
- it is mandatory make pre-task criterias before the skills meeting and submit them to Moodle one day prior the lesson
- professional behaviour during the lessons

Will be updated before the orientation ( with theory orientation)
Participation in teaching and learning in the skills class rooms.
Due to COVID19 pandemic situation some learning/teaching might be online.

All material given by the teachers during the skills lessons

Student workload

1 ECTS is 27 hours students' work.
3x 4h meetings and individual study.

Further information

Participation in surgical nursing and parenteral fluid therapy and blood transfusion courses before this course. Contents of the lessons:
- surgical wound care ( P3- class room, masks required)
- surgical dressings, bandages, stoma care, care for a patient with a tracheostomy (P3-class room: masks required)
- surgical patient's parenteral nutrition and hydration, central venous catheter (Skills Center/Taitokeskus, masks required)
