Objectives (course unit)
The student
- demonstrates mastery of key knowledge of nursing of chronic diseases in surgical/medical patients;
- demonstrates mastery of evidence-based practice of nursing of chronic diseases in surgical/medical patients;
- demonstrates mastery of key knowledge in long-term rehabilitative nursing of surgical/medical patients.

Prerequisites (course unit)
First year and middle phase studies completed, at least 135 credits, including the basic-level studies in the field of the advanced professional studies. Participation in Nursing of Chronic Diseases 4 credits.

Assessment methods and criteria
The clinical training should be passed/accepted by the mentor nurse and tutor teacher. All given assignments should be done and returned as instructed.Reflective self-evaluation thorought the clinical practice.

Supervised clinical training. The student will have a mentor nurse/s and a supervising teacher during this clinical training.

Student workload
9 ECTS is 243 hr.
Total working hours in the clinical setting 230h. Independent study, the given written assignments and evaluation and reflection meetings with teacher and other students. Public holiday hours (Helatorstai) may be deducted from the total hours.
The clinical training hours are planned according to mentor nurse/s' working hours. THe student should work 3-shift work, including weekends.

The student should have participated in the theory and orientation to clinical training, nursing of chronic diseases classes/meetings before the clinical training.
Assessment criteria - pass/fail (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
FAIL
* Theoretical background, including understandng the care and showing appropriate knowledge iare not in the accepted level, misunderstanding concepts, treatments, care protocols
* Is not able to follow evidence-based practice in medical-surgical patients' care
* Is not able to work in a rehabilitative manner in medical-surgical patients' care
* Is not able to perform medication administration or manage clinical calculations
* Is not able to take care of the given assignments under supervision
* Neglects the responsibility to prepare him/herself to different care situations and tasks.
* Is not able to understand the care planning and evaluation
* Had difficulties providing support and guidance to the patient and his/her family members
* Is not able to guide patient in self-care and rehabilitation
*Does not take the responsibility of one's learning
*Had problems understanding and accepting feedback
* Does not follow ethical guidelines and priciples in patients' care
* Has challenges to work in a group, has difficulties understanding the concepts of medical surgical chronic diseases
*Does not follow the instructions stated by the UAS, e.g. goal planning, keeping supervising teacher informed
SATISFACTORY (minimum level for accepted clinical training)
* Has theoretical basics of medical-surgical nursing, is able to use evidence-based knowledge
* Is able to recognise and define most common long-term, chronic medical surgical conditions, understands the factors affecting patient's health condition and recognises the most common disturbances in vital condition
* Is able to work in a rehabilitative manner with medical-surgical patients
* Is able to perform medication administration, parenteral fluid therapy and masters clinical calculations
* Is able to recognise the changes in most common chronic conditions with medical-surgical patients
* Is able to evaluate the care and patient's condition, and to plan appropriate care methods
* Knows the most common care and observation methods, but is not necessarily able to justify the best choices for the care
* Understands the meaning of chronic illnesses for the patient and his/her family and is able to support them and provide information concerning self-care
* Takes responsibility of one's learning
* Recognises the ethical principles in chronically ill patients' care
* Recognises one's own cooperation and communication skills and stregths when taking care of chronically ill patients in nursing care environment
* Understands the meaning and importance of rehabilitative nursing care
* Understands the meaning and improtance of patient guidance in nursing care
* Follows the instructions given by the UAS and keeps supervising teacher informed
