Objectives (course unit)
The student is able to
- know the pre-analytical factors, test indications and the clinical relevance of basic urine tests and the most common body fluid tests
- perform a cell count using a Bürker chamber and perform related calculations
- know the criteria for identifying urine particles and the mechanism of urine particle formation, and can identify and name the findings
- explain the meaning and causes of the findings
- apply quality control
- know the principles of quality control
- work professionally in a group
Content (course unit)
Body fluid analyses, pre-analytical factors and quality control
Basic urine analyses and pre-analytics, at basic and advanced levels
Microscopic analysis of urine particles, pathological and normal findings
Quality control and assessment in urine particle analysis
Cell-chamber counting
Prerequisites (course unit)
Participation in the course requires that the student has passed the study modules Enzymes, Lipids and Carbohydrate Metabolism 7B00EG22 and Electrolytes, Blood Gases, Proteins and Waste Products 7B00EG23.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student knows the most common body fluid analyses and their medical indications. The student knows the pre-analytical factors of body fluid tests and can name some of them. The student knows how to perform a cell count in a cell chamber and can calculate the results. The student can identify ways to ensure quality control.
The student can identify urine particle findings on a basic level and estimate their amount with sufficient accuracy. The student can analyse samples in microscopy but needs help occasionally. The student is unable to justify his/her decisions and works mechanically relying on a pre-learned model. The student can give and receive feedback.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student knows common body fluid analyses and their medical indications. The student can explain the pre-analytical factors of the more common body fluid tests and their effects on sample quality and the reliability of results. The student knows how to perform a cell count in a cell chamber and can calculate the results. The student is able to apply the theory to quality assurance and can justify his/her decisions.
The student can identify urine particle findings on an advanced level and is able to estimate their amount. The student performs microscopy exercises with instructions and is able to justify his/her decisions. The student is able to give and receive feedback actively and constructively.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student knows extensively the medical indications of body fluid analyses. The student is able to explain the preanalytical factors of body fluid tests and their effects on sample quality and the reliability of results. The student knows how to perform a cell count in a cell chamber and can calculate the results. The student is able to apply the theory to quality assurance and can justify his/her decisions.
The student can identify urine particle findings on an advanced level and is able to estimate their amount. The student performs self-directed microscopy exercises with instructions and can justify his/her decisions. The student can give and receive feedback actively and constructively and works responsibly and flexibly.
