Objectives (course unit)
The student is able to
- describe the basics of haemostasis
- know the most common laboratory tests used to evaluate coagulation disorders
- collect, handle and preserve coagulation specimens
- perform the most common coagulation tests reliably
- ensure quality control of haematology tests
- explain the operating principles of automatic cell counters and automatic microscopy and evaluate information produced by those devices.
- critically assess the quality of automated cell calculation measurements
Content (course unit)
Laboratory diagnostics and disorders of haemostasis
Automated haematology analysers and quality control
Prerequisites (course unit)
Introduction to Haematology and Basic Tests 7B00EG18 must be completed before the course.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student is able to explain the basics of haemostasis and knows the most important laboratory tests for haemostasis diagnostics and treatment. The student is able to collect, handle and preserve coagulation samples and analyse the most important coagulation tests. The student knows the operating principles of automated cell counters and automated microscopy used in haematology and can interpret the data produced by the devices under supervision. The student is able to evaluate the quality of haematological tests.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student knows the function of haemostasis and the most important laboratory tests used in diagnostics and in the monitoring of treatment. The student is able to collect, process and preserve coagulation samples and reliably analyse the most important coagulation samples. The student knows the operating principles of automated cell counters and automated microscopy used in haematology and can interpret the data produced by the devices. The student is able to evaluate the quality of the results of haematological tests.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student understands the function of haemostasis and apply the knowledge in diagnostics and monitoring of treatment. The student is able to collect, process and preserve coagulation samples and to perform the most common coagulation analyses in high quality. The student knows the operating principles of automated cell counters and automated microscopy used in haematology. The student is able to apply his/her knowledge in operating the devices and in interpreting the data produced by the devices. The student is able to evaluate and analyse the quality of the results of haematological tests.
