Getting Started on the Thesis (5cr)

Objectives (course unit)

Opintojakson tavoitteet
Opintojaksokokonaisuus (15 op) muodostuu Opinnäytetyön käynnistäminen (5 op) ja Opinnäytetyön raportointi (10 op) -opintojaksoista. Opintokokonaisuuden numeraalinen arvio merkitään Opinnäytetyön raportointi opintojaksolle.
Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on kehittää ja osoittaa opiskelijan valmiuksia soveltaa tietojaan ja taitojaan ammattiopintoihin liittyvässä käytännön asiantuntijatehtävässä (asetus).
Opinnäytetyön käynnistäminen opintojakson tavoitteena on, että opiskelija löytää opinnäytetyönsä aiheen, laatii aiheanalyysin ja käynnistää opinnäytetyön laatimisen ohjauksessa.

Content (course unit)

Opiskelija valitsee opinnäytetyönsä aiheen itse. Opinnäytetyön tulee olla työelämän käytännön toimeksianto tai muu työelämää hyödyttävä hanke. Opiskelija laatii aiheanalyysin, jonka hän toimittaa opinnäytetyön koordinaattorille. Koordinaattori nimeää sen perusteella opiskelijalle ohjaajan. Opiskelija jatkaa aiheanalyysiä opinnäytetyösuunnitelmaksi, jonka ohjaaja hyväksyy. Opinnäytetyön orientaatio on pakollinen osa opintojaksoa tehtävineen.

Location and time

The location and date of the kick-off meeting will be announced to the students during autumn. Otherwise thesis work is individual work supported with occasional meetings with thesis supervisor. These meetings will be arranged on individual basis.

There's no exam on this course.

Assessment methods and criteria

Once the student has taken part in the kick-off meeting, created and submitted their topic analysis and schedule to WIHI-system, and signed the thesis contract properly the course will be completed succesfully.

Teaching methods

A kick-off info-meeting will be held during autumn. The thesis process, different phases of the process and fundamentals of thesis will be introduced to the students during this meeting. Thesis work is individual activity that is supported by meetings with thesis supervisor which are held online or face-to-face.

The course also includes thesis topic analysis and scheduling of the thesis -project which will be discussed thoroughly with thesis supervisor. A thesis agreement or contract will be made with the customer of thesis project and this document will also be discussed with thesis supervisor.

For literature in English, the students should consult their thesis supervisor or obtain a reading list in the kick-off meeting.

Student workload

Estimated usage of time on this course is based on the credit amount. Estimated workload is thus 135 hours.

Content scheduling

Students will take part in the kick-off meeting where information about the course completion will be communicated.
Students will input their topic analysis to WIHI-system once ready and then a thesis supervisor will be assinged for each student.
Thesis process will then begin in collaboration with the thesis supervisor and the student will proceed to obtain a customer for their thesis.
Once a thesis agreement or contract has been signed, student will input the contract to OIVA and WIHI -systems. This will conclude the course.

Completion alternatives

The course can be included in the full credit of the course due to previous accomplishments.

Working-life connections are based on the thesis topics and activities of the students.

International connections

Possible international relations are based on the thesis topics and activities of the students.
