Objectives (course unit)

The aim is to improve the working life capabilities of the students and to help them to get a practical training position by offering training in occupational safety and fire safety. Students who have passed a course may purchase the occupational safety card and permit to work with fire.

Content (course unit)

1. Occupational Safety and Fire Working 2 cr
Occupational Safety deals with the general principles of occupa-tional safety and collaboration in the work place and gives the stu-dents the basic skills needed to recognise dangers in their working environment. The training is preceded by assignments and the training itself consists of 16 hours, during which the occupational safety is considered from a physical (e.g. clothing, ergonomics, lighting) and mental point of view with a possible visit to the occu-pational safety exhibition. The occupational safety card awarded is valid for five years and a separate fee is collected for the card.

Fire Working training helps the students to understand the dan-gers of working with fire, how to arrange a temporary fire working station and the skills needed to carry out the preliminary fire extin-guishing. After having completed the training, the students may carry out fire working in temporary fire working stations and to su-pervise such work. The training is preceded by assignments and the training itself (complete with the theory, extinguishing practices and exam) takes one day. The fire working card awarded is valid for five years and a separate fee is collected for the card.

2. Hygiene Training 1,5 cr
Hygiene training promotes food safety by giving the students the basic knowledge of foodstuff microbiology and hygiene decrees. After having completed the course, the students can operate in eating, food distribution, food preservation, serving and selling in a hygiene manner. The training lasts for 14 hours and in order to receive the certificate in hygiene proficiency, the students must pass the national Evira exam. A separate fee is collected for the certificate.

3. First Aid 1, 1,5 cr
First aid training gives the students the skills to operate in accident situations. They are able to give emergency first aid (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation), to bind wounds and to splint fractures. The training consists of 18 hours and contains a final exercise with sta-ged accidents. 20 students are accepted for the training.
