Objectives (course unit)
The student
- is able to prepare the patient for anaesthesia and surgery
- is able to prepare the care environment for anaesthesia and surgery
- is able to monitor the vital signs of an anaesthetised patient during the surgical operation
- is able to apply the principles of aseptics and promote patient safety in perioperative nursing
- is trained in patient encounters and interaction in a perioperative care environment
Content (course unit)
- major factors observed in patient anaesthesia
- ventilation and assisting with intubation and alternative airway management techniques
- aseptic actions in the operating room
- preparing the patient for the operation in the operating room
- basic instruments and other equipment used in surgery
Prerequisites (course unit)
First year studies 50 ects completed, including the course on Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations.
Participation in courses on Perioperative Nursing and Intravenous Fluid Therapy and Blood Transfusion.

Assessment methods and criteria
Theoretical studies in perioperative nursing must be completed or combined with orientation training. Tamk students must have completed 40 ECTS of the early-stage studies before commencing the course, including Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations.
100% participation in each of the three thematic areas (anaesthesia nursing, operative nursing, perioperative device technology) and completing the preliminary tasks mentioned in the orientation.

Teaching methods
Demonstrations, collaborative learning, independent study. Orientation with theory course. Mandatory presence in orientation.

Learning materials
Tabula materials and same material as in theory course.
Assignments need to be prepared before attending the lessons.
Student workload
The student has 2h of anesthesia nursing (divided group), 2h of aseptic technique (divided group) in OR and 3h of perioperative device technology orientation training > Due to the Coronavirus situation, contact teaching has been reduced. Device technology orientation training is partially replaced by the written asignment.

Pass:
100% attendance and active, professional participation during the contact lessons.
Performing pre-assignment and returning them to the teacher prior to orientation training.
Fail:
Less than 100% attendance or passive, unprofessional participation during the contact lessons.
The student has not done and / or does not have pre-assignment when coming to the lesson.
