Objectives (course unit)
The student
- is able to communicate professionally with patients, their significant others and colleagues by observing nursing values and principles;
- is able to support, guide and empower patients' self-care and help patients in their daily activities by using safe nursing interventions;
- is able to monitor the patient's vital signs to identify the patient's basic needs;
- is able to make a nursing plan for his/her own patient in a holistic way, and give an oral and written report;
- is able to work ergonomically and follow aseptic principles;
- is able to safely implement patients' medication and fluid therapy under supervision;
- is able to plan his/her own personal learning outcomes and evaluate his/her learning during the clinical training;
- is able to identify his/her own development challenges.
Content (course unit)
holistic nursing
supervised clinical training 6 weeks
Prerequisites (course unit)
30 ects of initial stage studies must be completed before entering the middle stage studies. Completed courses Infection Control in Nursing, Daily Activities in Nursing, Clinical Nursing Methods, Promotion of Health and Functional Ability, Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations, Intravenous Fluid Therapy and Blood Transfusion must be included into those 30 ects.
Before the first Clinical Training, initial stage’s courses Orientation to Clinical Training; Basics of Clinical Nursing, Orientation to Clinical Training; Basics of Pharmacological Treatment, and Orientation to Clinical Training; Basics of Intravenous Fluid Therapy must be completed.
Prerequisites for the middle stage’s clinical training:
The student has participated in both the theory and Orientation to Clinical Training courses of nursing care of the clinical environment in question.
Assessment methods and criteria
Student must work all the required hours (230h) in the clinical placement, and participate in the info lesson and reflection meeting.
It is mandatory to plan, document and follow the general and specific goals set for the training.
Self-evaluation, mentor's and teacher's evaluation.
The training will be evaluated as pass/fail.

This is a supervised clinical training, 9 ECTS/ 6 weeks in different clinical (health care) settings.
To complete the requirements of this training: to complete required amount of hours, to achieve general and specific goals set for this practice, take care of the evaluation and written assignments according to the instructions.

Student workload
In total of 243 hours / 9 ECTS.
Included in the hours: actual practice in the clinical placement: 230 hours, approximately 38h 15 mins/week. Orientation lession at school (2h), reflection meeting at school (2h), self-evaluation, mentor's and teacher's evaluation meetings, written assignment (patient care plan in Docca).

The student
-has the basic knowledge, understanding and skills of nursing care, recognises possible needs for further information and actively searces information
-will understand the care path of the patient
-masters the basic principles of infection control and aseptic working manners
-can participate in medication and parenteral hydration administration under the supervision of mentors
-can observe and monitor basic life functions and vital signs, and understands and participates in decision-making in relation to patient's care
-masters professional communication and interaction with the patient, his/her family; masters family-centred nursing
-can work in a professional manner in a multidisciplinary team
-is able to plan, implement and evaluated patient's care in a patient-centred manner
-is able to participate in documentation, is able to plan and document patient's nursing care plan and nursing care summary
-maintains health promotion in patient's care
-will gain experience and competence in patient's guiding and is able to use different methods
-makes sure that patient safety is ensured at all times
-is a responsible student, who knows possible limitations in own practice
-maintains patient confidentiality at all times
-will follow all the instructions and guidelines set for the clinical training
-is able to evaluate own actions and work critically and realistically, is able to receive and give constructive feedback
