Objectives (course unit)

The student
- knows how to monitor an adult’s body temperature, respiration and circulatory systems, knows the normal values and is able to implement nursing care to resolve problems in these systems
- knows the ABCDE –method and how to assess patient’s vital signs based on the ABCDE method
- knows how to assess a patient’s pain and is aware of various methods of pain management
- takes responsibility for his/her learning and actions during small-group learning activities and commits himself/herself to goal-oriented problem solving process in small-group education.

Clinical and microbiological investigations
The student
- knows the most common clinical and microbiological investigations.

First Aid
The student
- is able to act on his/her own initiative in different emergency situations in the most common illness and emergency situations taking into consideration safety and the need of mental first aid.

Content (course unit)

Nursing
- monitoring of the circulatory system
- monitoring of respiration and nursing methods of respiratory support
- monitoring of body temperature and nursing actions and methods related to imbalances of thermal regulation
- assessment of a patient’s vital signs based on the ABCDE –method and reporting of patient’s condition (ex ISBAR)
- pain types and pain management using non-pharmacological nursing methods
- basics of gas calculations

Clinical and microbiological investigations
- the most common clinical and microbiological investigations

First Aid
- recognition of emergency situations and call for help
- first aid for a person who is unconscious or suffering from a fit
- basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and CPR-D (defibrillation) of children or adults
- first aid of trauma patients
- mental first aid

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

Nursing
The student
- knows the basic requirements of human blood circulation, breathing, and heat regulation, and can identify nursing interventions in these areas
- knows the normal values of the different monitoring areas
- knows the types of pain and can identify nursing interventions to help in pain management

Clinical and microbiological examinations
The student
- is familiar with key laboratory tests and is able to search for instructions in manuals
- is able to perform venous and skin stitch sampling under supervision
- is able to perform ECG registration under supervision

Emergency care
The student
- knows how to give first aid in the most common illness and accident situations, taking into account the need for safety and mental first aid

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

Nursing
The student
- knows how to monitor adult activity regarding the thermoregulatory, respiratory and circulatory systems, knows their normal functions and knows in detail how to perform nursing interventions for problems in the mentioned areas
- knows how to monitor pain and is aware of different methods of pain management

Clinical and microbiological examinations
The student
- is able to apply his/her knowledge regarding key laboratory tests
- understands pre-analytic factors and knows the methods for handling samples
- is able to search for instructions in manuals
- is able to perform venous and skin stitch sampling under supervision
- is able to perform ECG registration under supervision and analyse the quality of the registration

Emergency care
The student
- knows how to provide emergency care in the most common illness and accident situations, taking into account the need for safety and mental first aid

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

Nursing
The student
- analyses, explains in detail and combines knowledge regarding the thermoregulatory, respiratory and circulatory systems, knows their normal functions and knows in detail how to perform nursing interventions for problems in the mentioned areas, in various professional contexts

Clinical and microbiological examinations
The student
- is able to supplement his/her personal awareness with professional knowledge
- is able to assess the indications of main laboratory tests and understands the connection between the the methods of handling lab samples and their quality and results
- is able to interpret the knowledge from the instruction manuals
-is able to perform venous and skin stitch sampling under supervision
- is able to perform ECG registration under supervision, analyse its quality and explain possible error factors

Emergency care
The student
- knows how to diversely apply his/her knowledge of emergency care in the most common illness and accident situations, and reflects on his/her performance from many different viewpoints, explaining in detail his/her own actions
- takes into account the need for safety and mental care in emergency treatment

Assessment methods and criteria

All the skills stations, small groups, Orientation to the course (21.10.2019), and Orientation to First Aid and Orientation to Clinical examinations are mandatory. All the tasks must be submitted and completed by 16.12.
