Objectives (course unit)

The student
- knows the basic concepts of epidemiology;
- is able to follow national and international programs for health promotion;
- is able to implement nursing of outpatient health care clients utilising evidence-based knowledge;
- is trained for coaching healthy living;
- knows the basics of emergency situations and environmental health care.

Content (course unit)

- the frequency of the most common diseases
- the factors causing diseases
- nursing in health center receptions
- new working methods in primary health care
- coaching methods for mode of life guidance
- nursing in exceptional circumstances and environmental health
- special issues in nutrition

Prerequisites (course unit)

30 ects of initial stage studies must be completed before entering the middle stage studies.

Exam 16.09.2019 12.30 - 14.30 (Epidemiology and Nursing in Outpatient Health Care; Nurse appointment)
Retakes on Electronic Exam service, dates will be updated later.

Assessment methods and criteria

Exam: 0-5
Seminar (Epidemiology/Public Health): pass/fail, 100% presence, active participation.
Small groups, PBL: pass/fail, 100% presence, active participation.

Teaching methods

Flipped method, lectures, presentations, group work, independent work, problem based learning
Flipped method needs the student to be prepared for the lectures before hand.

- is able to evaluate routinely the needs and urgency of client’s care in care situations
- is able to assess the client’s need of care, planning, implementing and assessing nursing care in accordance with instructions
- recognises the need for broaching difficult topics in client encounter situations
- knows the principles of lifestyle guidance and self-care support
- knows the connection between risk factors and morbidity and is able to define basic concepts of epidemiology
- knows the operating principles in environmental health hazards.
The student takes responsibility for his/her learning and actions during lectures and small-group learning activities.

The student
- is able to assess the needs and urgency of client care taking into account individuality utilising evidence-based knowledge
- is able to assess the nursing care need, plan, implement and assess nursing care based on evidence, taking into account the individuality of the patient
- recognizes the need for broaching difficult topics in client encounter situations
- is able to perform effective lifestyle guidance and support the client's self-care
- is able to use epidemiological knowledge in his/her work
- knows the operating principles in environmental health hazards.
The student takes responsibility for his/her learning and actions during lectures and small-group learning activities.

The student
- is able to assess the need and urgency of client-oriented care flexibly by using evidence-based knowledge
- is able to assess the nursing care need, plan, implement and assess nursing care based on evidence, taking into account the individuality of the patient
- recognises the need for broaching difficult topics in client encounter situations and knows how to act
- is able to carry out client-oriented effective lifestyle guidance and support the client's self-care using diverse techniques and methods
- is able to use epidemiological knowledge in his/her work taking into account the individuality of the client
- knows the operating principles regarding environmental health hazards.
