Objectives (course unit)

Students:
- know steering structures, suspension, suspension damping, wheel and tire structures and their effects on the handling characteristics of the vehicle
- know the braking system structures.

Content (course unit)

The course covers steering, wheel angle effect to the driving characteristics, tilt and nod center determination, suspension and damping effect on drive comfort and safety, design of suspension and damping, braking system engineering.

Location and time

Implementation will take place in autumn. Precise schedule will be told in the beginning of the course.

Exam schedules

There is one examination during the implementation. Renewal of examination is possible in two events after implementation.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Assessment of implementation and its importance:
- planning work 50 %
- learning diary 20 %
- examination 30%.
Independent TABULA-exercises will be included to learning diary.

Lectures, exercises in class and home, group work.

- exercises in class 10 hours

Implementation consists of:
- steering systems
- wheel alignment
- handling
- suspension
- spring types, characteristics and dimensioning
- vibration and damping
- tyres and rims
- braking systems and dimensioning.

Student has not be able to do planning work, learning diary or examination acceptably.

Assessment criteria - satisfactory (1-2) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Can recognize and define vehicle suspension structures. Knows different suspension components, but can not justify own choices. Works in a group. Recognizes own co-operation skills. Recognizes automotive engineering working methods.

Assessment criteria - good (3-4) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Can analyze suspension components choices to each other. Can choose best components to vehicle and justify own choices. Can work responsible in group and is ready to improve co-operational skills.

Assessment criteria - excellent (5) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Understands widely suspension components in vehicle. Can choose and scale suspension components and create new structures. Can co-operate responsible, flexible and constructively. Develop both own and group co-operation.
