Objectives (course unit)

Students
- are able to perform basic clinical microbiology work and explain the bases for their operations
- are able to perform basic bacteriology analyses safely, reliably and economically
- can explain the whole analysis process of clinical microbiology and its progress
- can evaluate preanalytical information, quality of specimens, and quality factors of analysis process when working and giving analysis results
- know information systems and result practices of laboratories
- are able to work in multiprofessional work community and evaluate their own know-how
- know clinical meaning of laboratory results
- know follow-up and reporting practices concerning infectious diseases
- are able to supervise clients and other health care personnel in the most common laboratory tests and sample collection of clinical microbiology

Content (course unit)

Practice of bacteriology analysis process under supervision in one or two of the following (depending on the clinical training place): urine culture, pus culture (aerobic), blood culture, faecal culture, throat culture, or susceptibility tests for antibiotics.
Assignments for practice:
- Primary culture
- Pure and spread culture
- Identification and identification criteria of bacteria
- Most common further analysis methods and stains
- Susceptibility tests (completion, measurement, and giving results)
- Automation in clinical microbiology
- Result practices and clinical meaning of results
- Follow-up and reporting practices concerning infectious diseases
- Quality assessment methods
- Occupational safety and economy
- Work community skills

Prerequisites (course unit)

The student must have passed 7B00BC26 Principles of Clinical Microbiology and Bacteriology before the course 7B00BC06 Clinical Training in Clinical Microbiology Laboratory
