Objectives (course unit)

The student is able to analyse, communicate and debate timeless and topical issues of media culture, channels and platforms from different angles like the production process, consuming, ethics, sustainability and business.
The student can use some collaborative online services and prepare a presentation about media with a team. Student is able to collaborate in an international student team.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Students are evaluated according to attendance, participation, own blog writing, peer blog feedback, weekly task completion, MindTrek attendance and a final task with accompanying presentation.

Teaching methods

Lectures, classroom discussions, group work, blog writing, peer feedback, presentations, pre and post task for lectures which normally includes reading an article or academic piece and writing about it.

Learning materials

Materials include course blog, PowerPoint lectures, films, academic writing, online articles and games.

Student workload

Students are required to attend lectures each week, perform pre-tasks before the lectures, post-tasks afterwards and keep up a blog to document their own assignments. Additionally, students are required to attend a two-day conference, MindTrek, in Tampere on the 17th and 18th of October.

The course aims to broaden an understanding of the way media works in today's fluid media landscape. Anyone keen on a career involving media should find the course engaging and pertinent.

Further information

Attendance at the MindTrek 2016 conference is mandatory. Students are required to attend the first two days of the conference - the 17th and 18th of October, held at the Tampere Hall Congress and Concert Centre. Tickets are supplied by TAMK free of charge.
