Objectives (course unit)

The student
- recognises the symptoms of different mental health and substance abuse problems and is able to assess the need for care according to the severity of the symptoms and their effects on the functional ability;
- knows the primary medication in mental health and substance abuse problems and is able to use nursing interventions to promote compliance;
- can assess the need for care of patients and their significant others in special mental health or substance abuse services and promote nursing cooperation with them;
- works professionally in nurse-patient relationships and with patients’ significant others promoting recovery.

- mental health and substance abuse problems treated in special health care
- psychopharmacology and medical treatment of substance abuse problems, patient education and motivation
- psychological measurements in mental health and substance abuse problems
- nurse-patient relationship with patients and their families in different age groups
- demanding interaction situations
- professional decision-making
- documentation

Prerequisites (course unit)

First year and middle phase studies completed, at least 135 credits, including the basic level studies in the field of the optional professional studies
