Objectives (course unit)

After successful completion of the course students:
- are able to pronounce Finnish quite correctly
- can understand and use short and simply-structured Finnish expressions that concern some of the most common matters and situations related to everyday life (introducing oneself and one’s family, telling the time, buying and paying, timetables, asking and answering, possessing, place and location).

Content (course unit)

- basics of the Finnish language
- structural exercises
- pronunciation exercises
- conversational and drama exercises
- listening comprehension exercises
- reading comprehension exercises
- written exercises.

Location and time

In the second period usually on Mondays 14.15 - 15.45 and on Thursdays 10.15 - 11.45 in B6-30. However, the first time on Monday the 22.10. 16.15 - 17.45.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Continuous assessment based on class work (activity, presence, completed exercises), passed smaller tests and the final examination. To pass the course minimum attendance 80 % is required.

Learning materials

Textbook with exercises and an audio: SUN SUOMI - Finnish for beginners (by Kristiina Kuparinen, Terhi Tapaninen & Karoliina Kuisma). Materials made or selected by the teacher - loaded or linked on course-Tabula.

Student workload

24 contact lessons during the second period. Also quite much independent work is needed to make it possible to learn the basics properly! 3 ECTs course means 3 x 27 hours (81 hours) work! To build up one's motivation is very important: to find useful, fun and creative ways to learn, use and understand Finnish. So have Finnish as a hobby also in your free time!

Assessment criteria - satisfactory (1-2) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

A student has completed all the assignments acceptably and attended at least 80 % of the contact lessons. She/he can exchange greetings/farewells, introduce oneself, name a few objects and copy some words that she/he has learned.

Assessment criteria - good (3-4) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

A student has an active attitude towards studying Finnish language and culture showing that by completing written tasks according to the schedule. She/he is able to pronounce Finnish clearly enough. Student’s mother tongue has an effect in pronunciation and/or sentence structure. A student can participate in a simple conversation on very familiar topics using memorized words and phrases. She/he is able to respond to simple questions. Visual support in communication is often needed. She/he can copy familiar words and write some frequently practiced words and short sentences from memory.

A student has a positive and active attitude towards learning language and she/he is genuinely interested in Finnish culture, and brings it up by comparing Finnish to her/his own culture. She/he can pronounce Finnish distinctively and is able to use suitable and varied expressions in everyday situations using grammar almost correctly. A student is able to write brief texts in Finnish which are mostly correct. A student can participate in a conversation asking and responding to questions about topics studied in the course. She/he can write simple descriptions or stories and recombine words and phrases into new sentences.
