Objectives (course unit)
Student is able to
- acquire special expertise in a field s/he is interested in and that respods to the needs of working life and developes their expertise
- use project work skills participating in research and developement projects
- apply theories of special fields in practice and construction of a written assignment
-utilize language and communication skills according to the requirements for their professional field
-work in the international working enviroments
-work in international working enviroments in accordance with the study objectives
- use international scientific research in constructing the written assignment
- participate in professional discussion in working life and seminars to develope competence in biomedical laboratory science
Content (course unit)
Optional Professional / Advanced Studies can be selected from the following study modules:
- point of care testin
- sample collection services
- clinical chemistry
- clinical haematology and immunohaematology
- automation and production in clinical laboratory
- molecular biology, genetic and tissue technology
- clinical microbiology
- clinical histology and cytology
- clinical physiology, neurophysiology and nuclear medicine and athletic physiology
- laboratory services in emergency care and other acute situations
- laboratory equipment technology, marketing and selling in bio field enterprises
- current quality and development projects, projects of the university of applied sciences
- laboratory services in veterinary medicine laboratories
- clinical places in international student exchange
- other health care expertise to increase/expand biomedical laboratory science competence
Prerequisites (course unit)
Student select 17 cr of one ( or two) offered courses and / or projects. The course contents are planned in cooperation with working life and can be also linked bachelor's thesis. The studies include 6 weeks / 9 credits of supervised clinical training. The studies or parts of them may also be completed in international students exchange. The student constructs a written assignment on field and present it in a seminar session. Clinical training in Finland and the written assignment can be also completed in English. A written assignment can form a part of a project report.
International exchange students may participate in the studies provided that the clinical training agreements can be made.
Prerequisites for field-spesific optional professional studies are that the field-spesific studies in the field have beeb passed in advance. Field-spesific studies can also be selected on clinical microbiology or histology and cytology if the student has not completed the clinical training. In this case, 2 weeks of the clinical training are optional clinical training in the field.

The written assignment and presentation, and seminar-sessions are graded. Approved clinical training.
The student must have passed 13SBIO-1006 Field-Specific Studies in Laboratory Examination Processes before the course 13SBIO-1034 Optional Professional /Advanced Studies in Biomedical Laboratory Science.
