Objectives (course unit)
The aim of the course is to perceive a bridge as a part of a traffic route. The structural design of a bridge is not part of the course, but the knowledge of bridge load, quality demands and building methods gives a good basis for both design and construction task as well as bridge repair work.
The students learn to recognise bridge types and know their applications. They are able to evaluate the financial construction span and method for each type. The students familiarise themselves with bridge inspection, condition assessment and the most common repair methods.

Content
Bridges in Finland, bridge load, types of bridges and their applicability to various conditions, bridge structures, building materials and functional quality demands. The shuttering work, housing, reinforcing and concreting work and their quality demands for in situ bridges as well as the structural methods of piers. Wood and steel bridges, using elements in bridge construction.
Inspection method of bridges, condition assessments and the most common repair methods.
