Objectives (course unit)

Student understands basic principles and theory of mechanics of materials. Student is able to analyse and dimension simple machine components under typical static load cases.

Content (course unit)

The basic concepts of strength of materials, stress, strain and shear strain. The stress- strain relation. Tension and compression of a straight bar. Pure shear. Torsion. The geometric properties of cross-section. Bending of a straight beam. Buckling. Hyperstatic structures.
