Objective of course
Students can aurally analyse and transcribe tonal and free-tonal melodies from the Renaissance to the music of the 20th century. Students have a command of irregular rhythm patterns and varying time signatures and has become acquainted with polyrhythms. Students are able to analyse music from different periods systematically, are capable of conceptual analysis and of expressing this analysis in a literary form. Students have the ability to apply their knowledge and skills of music analysis in practice.
Course contents
Melody
singing and dictations of free-tonal melodies and melodies based on synthetic scales and free chordal combinations
developing the ability to aurally analyse music for several voices
Harmony
dictations and aural examples of modulating tonal harmony
an introduction to free-tonality
Rhythm
singing and dictations of irregular rhythm patterns and time signatures
an introduction to polyrhythms
Teaching methods
discussion, group work, exercises in melody, harmony and rhythm through singing, playing and aural analysis
Assessment methods
1. Written examination
Aural analysis of melody, 2-part music, harmony and rhythm
2. Oral examination
two samples from a repertoire of 10 prepared songs
exercises in prima vista: song, the reading of rhythms
singing chords
3. Assessment of participation in the study methods of the course
Any unaccepted parts of the examination will be completed a common examination date during the following academic year.
