Objectives (course unit)

Students learn the most important concepts and tasks of facility engineering and know operation of housing corporations and housing market principles.

Content (course unit)

Basic concepts and tasks offacility management, meaning of building management in national economy, facility maintenance tasks, planning and organisation, basics of facility and energy economy, factors affecting microclimate of facilities, facility maintenance agreements, facility safety, housing corporations, and housing market principles

Exam will be at the end of the course.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Evaluation and the grounds for evaluation:
Students are graded on a scale of 0 (fail) – 5 (excellent)
The examination (max 30 points and minimum 10 points) and the written and presented exercises (max. 10 points) will be basis for evaluation. Minimum points to pass the course are 20 points.
Active participation, minimum 60 %, to lectures compulsory.

Teaching methods

Learning methods:
Contact teaching, lectures, active participation in class, independent studies, net learning, activating writing, individual and group exercises, seminar presentations, practices and assignments, a final examination. Teaching language will be English.

Learning materials

Learning material:
Handouts and learning materials to be announced in class during lectures. Some learning material will be accessible through Tabula environment and some are in the Internet.

Student workload

Time usage and teaching arrangements:
Lectures 42 hours. Also independent studies and individual and group exercises and seminar presentations.

Content scheduling

Contents of the course:
Basic concepts of real estate management. Significance of facility management in national economy, life span for facilities, organisations of the field of real estate, information sources. Also basics of maintenance, governing and economics of facility management. Basics of apartment building companies, housing trade and security engineering in facilities.

Further information

The aim of the course is to educate students to understand the significance of the facility management (FM) and the operations & maintenance (O&M) for buildings and premises. The students will come to know, how the FM and O&M processes serve the needs of the owners and the users of the buildings. The students learn the main concepts and tasks of facility management, know the administration and operation of apartment building (housing) companies and the basics of housing trade.

The student shows poor knowledge of the facility management and the operations & maintenance of buildings and the other subjects of the course in a final examination.
The student shows poor participation and interest in lectures, exercises and seminar presentations.

The student understands the basics of facility management and the operations & maintenance of buildings and other course subjects in a final examination.

The student shows active participation and diverse reflection on the course subjects in the lectures as well as in a final examination. The student produces good quality exercise reports and presentations using extensively the course material and other publicly available material.
