Contact teaching: introduction, lab work (student’s presence is compulsory) 42h
Pre-tasks, studying, reporting 40 h

Content scheduling

The laboratory works will be done in period 1 and in the beginning of period 2. The course has three main subject areas: 1. activated sludge analyses, 2. activated sludge process and 3. coagulation, flocculation and chemical precipitation.

Further information

Learning goals
To familiarize the student with the most common wastewater treatment methods and processes in laboratory scale, to carry out a wastewater analysis in connection to the pilot plants in use.

Assessment criteria - fail (0) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Missing laboratory exercise(es), missing the exam.
OR
Student participated in all of the laboratory exercises and in the exam and collected overall 30-59 points.
This means that
-the pre-tasks were not done in time and only in a satisfactory manner
-or/and the student was often late and activity in the laboratory and participation in group work was modest
-and the exam shows that the student is not familiar with the methodology used in the lab exercises, basic concepts discussed during the course are not known

Assessment criteria - satisfactory (1-2) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Student participated in all of the laboratory exercises and in the exam and collected overall 30-59 points.
This means that
-the pre-tasks were not done in time and only in a satisfactory manner
-or/and the student was often late and activity in the laboratory and participation in group work was modest
-or/and background information for the exercises and studying material in advance has been minimal
-and/or reporting has been structured according to the instructions but literature references are missing, presentation or calculation of the results incomplete, discussion and conclusions are inadequate, conclusions might be even missing
-and the exam shows that the student is only superficially familiar with the methodology used in the lab exercises, but knows however the basic concepts discussed during the course

Assessment criteria - good (3-4) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Student participated in all of the laboratory exercises and in the exam and collected overall 60-90 points.
This means that:
-Pre-tasks were in most of the cases done in time, the answers were acceptable
- or/and the student was seldom late and activity in the laboratory and participation in group work was good
-or/and background information for the exercises and studying material in advance has been proper. Laboratory equipment have been cleaned/washed and the workplace has been cleaned carefully after the exercises
--and/or reporting has been structured according to the instructions , with references to the reliable sources, presentation or calculation of the results mostly correct eventually with small mistakes, discussion and conclusions are adequate, conclusions are always drawn but might be incorrect ones
-and the exam shows that the student knows the basic concepts discussed during the course and understands the methodology used in the lab exercises

Assessment criteria - excellent (5) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Student participated in all of the laboratory exercises and in the exam and collected overall over 90 points.
This means that:
-Pre-tasks were done in time, the answers were acceptable
- and the student was never late and activity in the laboratory and participation in group work was excellent, student was self-initiated and took the group members into account in a constructive manner
-and the student has been well prepared for the exercises and participated actively in group discussions. Has studied the given material carefully and perhaps found some material of his/her own. If mistakes or errors were done in the lab, those have been corrected. Laboratory equipment have been cleaned/washed and the workplace has been cleaned carefully after the exercises
-and reporting has been structured according to the instructions , with references to the reliable sources, presentation or calculation of the results correct, discussion and conclusions are adequate and based on comparison to literature. Conclusions are clear and the significance of the work is clearly expressed.
- and the exam shows a deep understanding of methodology used in the lab exercises and that the student knows the concepts discussed during the course
