Objectives (course unit)
After completing this course student:
- understands the basic laws, concepts and processes of chemistry
- can calculate, write and balance chemical equations
- knows how to handle safely the chemicals and wastes in the laboratory
- knows how to use a range of laboratory equipments and is familiar with the steps of chemical analysis.
Content (course unit)
Chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, redox reactions, chemical law, acts, decrees, chemical equipments, basic qualitative and quantitative methods with use in analysis of environmental samples
Prerequisites (course unit)
5E00BF56 Basic Chemistry or corresponding course
Exam schedules
Two partial exams: one in the middle and the second at the end of the course. Retakes will be agreed later.
Evaluation methods and criteria
Grading scale is 0-5. The course grade will form according to the points collected as follows:
1.7 short assignments (max 3 points/assignment), containing the home exercises which are given weekly: max. 21 points
2. 6 laboratory exercises and related reporting: max.30 points
3.Exam ( given in two parts): max. 30 +20 = 50 points
Grading: grade 0: 0-29 points; grade 1: 30-44 points; grade 2: 45-59 points; grade 3:60-74 points; grade 4: 75-89 points; grade 5: 90-100 points.

Further information
Learning goals
•to understand the phenomena that determine the structures of liquids and solids
•to understand the fundamentals of chemical equilibrium, acids and bases and buffers
•to solve problems related to gas laws, solubility, pH
•to calculate the oxidation numbers and identify the oxidizing and reducing compounds in a redox reaction
•to understand the fundamentals of qualitative, quantitative and instrumental analysis
Assessment criteria - satisfactory (1-2) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
Student participated in the exam and laboratory exercises and collected overall 30-59 points. This means that
-the laboratory reports were done superficially and mistakes in the calculations were often done
-and/or most of the assignments were done but only in a satisfactory manner
-and the exam shows that the student is familiar with the basic concepts discussed during the course but does mistakes in the applications of them
-student was rarely present in the lectures showing minimal activity
Assessment criteria - good (3-4) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
Student participated in the exam and laboratory exercises and collected overall 60-89 points. This means that
-the laboratory reports were done properly with only few mistakes in calculations
-and/or most of the assignments were done properly
-and the exam shows that the student is familiar with the basic concepts discussed during the course and can apply them
-student was mostly present and rather active in the lectures
Assessment criteria - excellent (5) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
Student participated in the exam and laboratory exercises and collected overall over 89 points. This means that:
-the laboratory reports were done properly with no mistakes in calculations
-and/or the assignments were done properly
-and the exam shows that the student knows the concepts discussed during the course and can apply them
-student was present and active in the lectures
