Objectives (course unit)
After completing this course student:
- understands the basic laws of chemistry
- can write chemical formulas
- can write and balance chemical equations
- can solve problems related to chemical quantities, like mol, molar mass, molecular formula
- Knows the gas laws, the properties of liquids and solids
- can calculate concentrations
- can solve problems related to: gas laws and exotherm and endotherm processes.
Content (course unit)
Measurements, atoms and elements, molecules and compounds, chemical quantities, chemical reactions, structures of solids and liquids, gases, solutions.
Exam schedules
Exam in two parts (mid term and at the end)
Before satrting the laboratory work a compulsory safety exam has to be passed
Evaluation methods and criteria
Grading scale is 0-5. The course grade will form according to the points collected as follows:
-6 short assignments (max 5 points/assignment), containing the home exercises which are given weekly max.30 points and three laboratory reports (max 20 points/total)
-Exam max.60 points
Grading: grade 0: 0-29 points; grade 1: 30-44 points; grade 2: 45-59 points; grade 3:60-74 points; grade 4: 75-89 points; grade 5: 90-100 points
Teaching methods
Contact teaching, exercises, discussions, self study, assignments, laboratory work, reports, exam
Student workload
Contact lessons and discussions 70 hours, Self-study 65 hours
Total 135 h
Content scheduling
Atomic structure, Periodic table, chemical bonds, chemical quantities, chemical reactions, concentrations, laboratory safety, three laboratory exercises
Further information
Learning goals
• to understand the fundamental laws of chemistry
• to write the formulas of compounds, balance chemical equations and to use the equations for calculations
• to learn to work in the laboratory in a safe manner
Assessment criteria - satisfactory (1-2) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
The student passed the safety exam before starting the laboratory work and participated in the laboratory work and did the laboratory reports.
Student participated in the exam and collected overall 30-59 points. This means that
-the laboratory reports were done superficially and mistakes in the calculations were often done
-and/or most of the assignments were done but only in a satisfactory manner
-and the exam shows that the student is familiar with the basic concepts discussed during the course but does mistakes in the applications of them
-student was rarely present in the lectures showing minimal activity
Assessment criteria - good (3-4) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
The student passed the safety exam before starting the laboratory work and participated in the laboratory work and did the laboratory reports.
Student participated in the exam and collected overall 60-89 points. This means that
-the laboratory reports were done properly with only few mistakes in calculations
-and/or most of the assignments were done properly
-and the exam shows that the student is familiar with the basic concepts discussed during the course and can apply them
-student was mostly present and rather active in the lectures
Assessment criteria - excellent (5) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
The student passed the safety exam before starting the laboratory work and participated in the laboratory work and did the laboratory reports.
Student participated in the exam and collected overall over 89 points. This means that:
-the laboratory reports were done properly with no mistakes in calculations
-and/or the assignments were done properly
-and the exam shows that the student knows the concepts discussed during the course and can apply them
-student was present and active in the lectures
