Objectives

The learning objectives for the Orientation Course for International Students:
1. Understanding academic expectations: International students. starting their studies at TAMK, will have an understanding of the academic expectations and requirements of TAMK. This includes knowledge of academic policies, course expectations, and academic support resources available.
2. Familiarization with campus resources: students will be aware of the different resources available to them on campus. These include e.g. libraries, counseling, career planning, student organizations, and health services.
3. Cultural adaptation: students will learn about the cultural norms and practices in Finland and TAMK. This includes information about language, social customs, and academic culture.
4. Safety and well-being: students will be aware of the safety and security measures on campus and in the surrounding community. They will also be aware of the health and well-being resources available to them.
5. Networking and community building: students will be given opportunities to connect with other students and start growing their network right from the beginning. This includes group activities, and other opportunities for building a sense of community and belonging.
6. Communication skills: students will be provided with information in communication skills. This can help them to better understand lectures, communicate with peers and staff memebers, and navigate the academic environment.
7. Goal setting: students will be encouraged to set academic and personal goals for themselves. This can help them to focus their efforts and make the most of their time studying at TAMK.

Content

The course will help to adjust to the new environment and academic setting. The course usually takes place before the start of the studies and covers a wide range of topics to ensure that every new student has the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed at TAMK and in social environment.
The course covers practical matters but will also provide information on campus resources, such as academic support services, extracurricular activities, and cultural events. Additionally, the orientation course offers information about language and cultural training to help international students navigate the nuances of Finnish culture and language.
The orientation course also provides opportunities for international students to connect with each other. This can help to foster a sense of community and support among international students, which is especially important during the early stages of adjustment to a new country and culture.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The purpose of the course is to provide information, support, and resources to international students to help them transition successfully to TAMK and the cultural environment in Finland.

The evaluation is assessed based on completed assigments and the reflection of the learning process and the course content. If the students fails to complete these assigmnets the evaluation will be assessed as 'fail', in other cases the course is evaluated as 'pass'.
