Objectives

Student
• understand the process of development using qualitative and operational methods
• be able to select and/or acquire appropriate materials and methods
• be able to analyse the data used
• be able to assess the reliability and ethicality of the analysis produced
• be able to draw conclusions from the results and report them appropriately as part of the thesis report
• be able to take into account throughout the research process that the thesis aims to meet the development needs of working life

Content

• qualitative research approaches and their backgrounds
• constructivist research, case and action research
• qualitative data and their analysis using thematic and content analysis principles
• research reliability and ethics
• convincing reporting and conclusions

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

The student will be able to
• apply a qualitative approach to research design, formulation of research questions, definition, acquisition and analysis of data, and assessment of the reliability and ethics of research.
• justify the decisions taken in the research process, including from the point of view of ethics and reliability.
• master thematic or content analysis in practice
• recognise the principles of action research and other development studies
