Objectives

Students understand the significance of language and interaction to maintaining and shaping social relations and social reality. They are familiar with the concepts used by approaches that interpret the contextuality of language and interaction, and they are able to use those concepts to interpret the ways in which interaction and language create social reality. They are also able to evaluate the interactional nature of social phenomena.

Content

The module discusses the main social scientific methods that are employed to analyse interaction and the use of language. These methods are discussed through examples that are drawn from various social contexts.
