Objectives
After completing the study unit, the student is able to understand the points of departure for interpreting and analyzing cultural texts. The student is able to identify and critically analyze representations and conventions in the production of cultural phenomena by employing the approaches presented during the course. The student understands how the historically layered social reality is constructed through narratives, performances, identities, and embodied experiences. Moreover, the student recognizes the polysemic nature of symbolically mediated communication, as well as the role of communication and cultural texts in the progress of human thought.
Content
During the study unit, media and cultural materials (e.g., phenomena, narratives, performances, texts, and games) are analyzed through a number of theoretical perspectives. The materials and the perspectives for their analysis are positioned in relation to the history of the theoretical viewpoints, and, for example, to the problematics of representation, identity, and multimodality. The relations between the formation, production, reception and interpretation of cultural phenomena are examined in their cultural and historical contexts.
