Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be able to explain the central principles of Finnish society and the Finnish legal system, be capable of working within those systems, and recognise their effect on the interpreter's working environment. The student will demonstrate a knowledge of the processes, actors, and basic principles of criminal and civil cases, as well as the administrative structures and operational principles of the police force. The student will be able to describe the phases, stakeholders, and contents of preliminary investigation criminal cases, police investigations, and immigration matters.
Content
The course unit covers the basic principles of Finnish society and the Finnish legal system that are important when working as a court interpreter: the central principles of public authorities; the central principles, phases, actors, and concepts of Finnish criminal and civil procedure; the administration and operatio of the police force; the phases, actors, and contents of preliminary investigation of a criminal case; the central points of Finnish immigration policy; the structures of immigration administration, and refugee and asylum seeker reception systems; and the phases, stakeholders, and contents of immigration services.
