Objectives

The course focuses on the latest developments and modern surface engineering technologies. The contents of the course are related to the industrial applications and the latest academic level research including the research of our own university. The topics include the relationships between processing, structure, properties and performances of advanced surface engineering technologies, e.g. thermal spraying, advanced weld surfacing, thin film technologies and surface modification technologies as well as the introduction to computational materials engineering for coatings. Learning outcomes:In-depth understanding of modern surface engineering processes.In-depth understanding of modern coating materials and their properties. Understanding of industrial use of modern surface engineering. Fluent application of research methods for scientific research and solving of research questions. Understanding of the development of advanced coatings and surface treatments as a part of designing processes. Effective oral and written scientific communication in professional forums. Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to: Understand the basic principles of advanced surface engineering processes and coatings on a nano, micro and macro scale, and relate the coating structures to the coating performances. Use coating materials processing, structure, properties and performance research results and obtained expertise and apply these to make decisions in coating material and deposition process selection. Select appropriate coating deposition processes for advanced surface engineering applications. Have relevant background skill for academic level research related to surface engineering.
