Adhesion and Surface Modifications (5cr)
Course unit code: C-10122-MSE--440
General information
- Credits
- 5 cr
- Institution
- University of Tampere
Objectives
The target of the course is to make participants understand the importance and factors of adhesion related to materials performance and the fundamental concepts of crack, fracture and delamination related to failure of adhesive bond. The target skills are the ability to apply surface treatments for specific materials to improve adhesion and the ability to plan work for understanding and solving practical problems related to the enhancement and semi-empirical prediction of adhesion.
Content
Core contentMain factors affecting adhesive bonds at material interfacesSurface characteristics: Wetting and surface energyImportance of adhesion to material performanceConcepts of crack, fracture and delaminationUnderstands scientific thinking, reasoning and explanation Complementary knowledgeThe student is able to solve possible adhesion problems in different production processes and can predict functionality of materials in terms of adhesion at bonds.Contact angle measurementsSpecific surface treatment and modification methods (e.g. corona, flame, plasma, chemical modification (primers, adhesion promoters), peening)Numerical models for bond failureSpecialist knowledgeDIfferent models of surface energy determinationSurface treatment devicesNonlinearity of materials, dissipation (damage)Knows the risks associated with digital environments and takes them into account in his/her own actions
