Objectives

After completing the course the student knows,is able to classify and can explain the principles of various analysis methods suitable for material performance evaluation. The student can summarize the failure mechanisms and the main principles and characteristics of each of the mechanisms. The student can analyze the impact of different environments on the initiation- and propagation of the most typical failures. The student is able to carry out basic failure analysis studies, apply basic material research techniques into the failure analysis procedures and produce simple failure analysis reports. The student will also be able to define different non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and to be able to demonstrate various NDT techniques to evaluate materials during processing and finished products and structures. The student can analyze the limitations and advantages of different NDT methods to select the appropriate techniques for inspections. Project work during the course enables the student to work as a group member in an expert position and motivates to understand the economical issues in utilisation of different analysis methods.

Content

Core contentGeneral principles of material performance analysisPrinciples of failure analysis, failure mechanisms and characteristics, practical aspects of failure analysis.Principles of NDT, basic NDT techniques (visual inspection, magnetic methods, thermal methods, radiography, ultrasound, acoustic emission, eddy current) and practical examples of applications of NDT.

Further information

Partial completions of the course must be carried out during the same implementation round.
