Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be able to place the English language in its Indo-European and Germanic historical context. The student will be familiar with the central developments in the phonetic form, spelling, structures, and lexicon of the English language through centuries, from the Old English period (450–1100) to the present day. In addition, the student will be able to explain the effect of historical and social factors on the development of the English language through different periods.

Content

The course unit examines where the English language is located in the language family tree. In addition, the course unit aims to clarify to the student how the history of the English language is divided into different periods, what the main linguistic features of these periods are, and how extra-linguistic factors impact the development of a language.
