Objectives

Student knows the responsibilities stated by the Act on Labour Protection for working in chemical laboratory, recognizes the hazard categories for chemicals according to the CLP-statute and the labelling of hazardous chemicals, knows where to find information about the properties of chemical substances, knows how to work safely and what personal protective equipment to use when working in chemical laboratory, knows how to handle flammable substances safely and correct actions in case of fire.

Core content The Act on Labour Protection, responsibilites of employer and employee, REACH statute, material safety data sheet, CLP statute: classification and labelling Protecting oneself from hazards caused by chemical substances in laboratory, personal protective equipment, electrical safety in laboratory, fire safety in laboratory, classification of flammable substances.Choosing and handling of glass ware, general instructions for working in chamical laboratory. Actions in case of accidents, first aid in different cases of exposure to hazardous chemicals. Complementary knowledge Compensations in case of accident taking place in student laboratory, hazardous situation announcement.Handling gases in laboratory, transport and storage of chemicals, handling chamical waste. Further information

Periodic course. Kept in English  in the beginning of 1st period. Approved completion mandatory before chemistry laboratory courses. The order of completion of chemistry laboratory courses: first the courses KEM.170 Laboratory Safety and Work Methods, KEM.200 Inorganic Analytical Chemistry Laboratory and KEM.230 Organic Chemistry laboratory 1 in this order, after that the order of completion is free. Those students who intend to complete the course KEM.200 Inorganic Analytical Chemistry Laboratory in the summer will complete this course in the fourth period. The course is not offered as summer teaching. Note that there is an attendance requirement for teaching sessions.The course is only intended for degree students.
