Objectives

The students orient themselves for going abroad, either for student exchange or practical training. They understand that a controlled and timely executed planning is a part of the learning process. They get the basic information of the practical matters that need to be handled and learn about cross-cultural communication. They commit to their period abroad and understand it significance for their personal development and professional growth. They understand that their time abroad consists of three equally important parts: courses and matters to be handled before leaving, during the time abroad and after coming back. The course prepares the students for exchange or practical training abroad.

Content

Setting one’s own goals for learning the language and substance, improving cultural knowledge, handling practicalities such as applying for a university abroad, student and housing grants of KELA, insurances, health care, travel arrangements, tickets, visas, working permits, permits and housing. TAMK grants, Learning Agreement, practical training contract, Transcript of Records, exchange/practical training reports, accreditation. Finnish identity as the basis for becoming more international, cross-cultural communication, culture shock and preparing for it, returning home. The students should take part in at least one orientation event organised by the local or national international network.
