Objectives

Students know conventional timber constructions used in small houses: timber frames, external walls, floors, upper floors and roof constructions. Students also acquaint themselves with the basics of heat and moisture techniques. Structures are both in situ built and prefabricated constructions.

Students know conventional timber frames, structures and building materials used in wooden small houses. Students recognize basic foundation techniques of wooden buildings and joints between building envelope and foundation structures. Students adopt skills to apply learned things to design work.

Students know basics of heat and moisture techniques.

Content

Timber constructions used in small houses: timber frames, external walls, floors, upper floors and roof constructions. Roofs and roofing materials. Conventional foundation solutions. Basic joints of structures.

Wooden building materials: timber and processed wooden building product, e.g. different board products, vapor and air barriers and heat insulation materials. Sources for additional information about materials and their performance.

Basics of heat techniques and simple cases about calculation of u-value. Conventional phenomena of moisture techniques.
