Objectives

Students are able to function in their own learning environment. They have acquired the communication skills and tools necessary for their studies. They have made the acquaintance of other first-year students, student tutors and key members of staff.

Students are familiar with the group communication situations relevant to their own field; they understand their own role in the communication process.

Students understand the importance of feedback in the communication process; they are capable of giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Students are able to apply the basic concepts of group communication to situations in their own field. They can describe their own communication skills realistically; they demonstrate willingness to develop as professional communicators in their own field.

Students possess learning skills and a knowledge of ethics. They have also studied international issues.

Content

- Participation in the orientation week activities
- Drawing up a personal study plan and a schedule for the academic year under the guidance of student tutors and the staff members responsible for the study options concerned.
- Becoming familiar over the course of the academic year with the concert calendar in Tampere and particularly at the Music Academy.
- Elements and levels of interaction
- Interaction styles
- Self-awareness and emotion and their role in interaction
- Good interaction, active listening, empathy
- Interacting in a group
- Interacting with people of different ages and different kinds
- Communicating in challenging situations
- Practice in using electronic tools and systems

The student is capable of:
- evaluating and developing his/her own skills and learning strategies.
- taking responsibility for his/her own actions and the consequences of these actions.
- taking into account the effects of international developments in his/her field, and the opportunities arising from these developments.
