Objectives

The student learns basic principles of biorefining processes and how especially wood based biomass can be utilized as raw material for biorefining processes.
The student will know different bio products.

Content

1.Introduction and products of biorefing
2. Non wood-biomass and industrial and municipal waste as a potential raw material in bio refining,
3. Wood: structure and chemistry; It’s potential as a bio based raw material
4. Pretreatment of biomass; mechanical processing of biomass (chipping, crushing, drying, pelletizing etc.
5. Wood based biorefining processes: mechanical and chemical pulping, chemical and thermochemical conversion
-hydrolysis and fermentation
-combustion, torrefaction, gasification, pyrolysis, liquidification
6. Special topics
a. Bioethanol production and Kraft mill; Production of lignin and biochemicals
b. Bioethanol purification processes
c. Kraft mill and energy production: new process concepts
