Objectives

After completing the course, the student is able to
• prevent non-communicable diseases and promote health using different methods at the individual, community and population levels
• evaluate the prevention methods and participate in the strategic development of them
• explain the epidemiology, etiology and pathophysiology of non-communicable diseases and the principles of the care
• provide patients with non-communicable diseases comprehensive and patient-centered care
• evaluate the demands of the patient’s individual medical treatment and analyse the factors which affect the carrying out of the medical treatment applying the basic pharmacological knowledge
• describe the future and the challenges of the care of non-communicable diseases

• Special characteristics of the Finnish national health
• Prevention methods of non-communicable diseases and the impact of multi-professional co-operation
• The epidemiology and pathophysiology of non-communicable diseases
• Comprehensive care of non-communicable diseases
• Medical treatment of non-communicable diseases from the clinical pharmacology perspective

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student
• is able to search for information on the subject and is able to use national and international sources
• is able to apply the collected information at a descriptive level when reviewing current practices and means of action
• does not display a critical evaluation of the topic

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student
• is able to seek evidence-based knowledge from both national and international sources, and is able evaluate the sources critically
• is able to construct both analyses and syntheses of the topic
• is able to use the acquired knowledge in critical evaluation and development of current practices

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• is able to retrieve evidence-based knowledge from a number of national and international sources of information, critically evaluate the studies and synthesise the collected data
• shows a profound command of the subject
• is able to evaluate current practices critically and is able to create new evidence-based practices
