Description

Genomic data is an example of big data that will significantly change the way healthcare in proceeding in the future. TAMK is involved in creating new capabilities and opportunities to innovate healthcare globally. The public will increasingly expect that registered nurses, public health nurses, midwives and biomedical laboratory scientists will use genetic and genomic information and technology when promoting counselling.
We offer the opportunity to deepen student’s knowledge and skills related to genetics and genomic counselling area in innovative learning environments and achieve the ability to implement guidance tailored to the individual needs of clients.

Structure:
Advanced Professional Studies 30 cr
Optional Advanced Studies 15 cr
Optional Studies 15 cr
Master's Thesis 30 cr

Duration of studies: 1,5 - 2 years.

The Degree Programme includes 15 ECTS of Optional Advanced Studies and 15 ECTS of Optional Studies. You can choose these studies according to your own interests and schedule for example from the Mutual Master Courses at TAMK. With optional advanced studies and optional studies, you supplement your skills according to your special professional needs.

Objectives

After completing the programme the student will be able to promote high standards of practice, encourage professional growth and increase public awareness of genetic counselling. The aim of the studies is to master comprehensive and highly specialised concepts, methods and knowledge corresponding to the specialised competence in genetics and genomics, which are used as the basis for independent thinking and research.
We offer the global perspective to integrate the competence of a registered nurse, public health nurse, midwife or a biomedical laboratory scientist to the genetic-genomic area. When nurses and biomedical laboratory scientists are to deliver safe, quality care, they need to be able to demonstrate competence in genetics-genomics as it applies to their practice specialty. Students will have the ability to integrate knowledge and handle complexity, formulate judgments with incomplete or limited information, always reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of this knowledge.

Curriculum development and working life cooperation

Curriculum is based on proposed curriculum for Master’s Degree in Genetic and Genomic Counselling by the European Board of Medical Genetics.

The curriculum is developed also in cooperation with other degree programmes of Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TUAS).

During the studies, collaboration with working life organisations and actors is performed; the studies also involve a variety of national and international projects.

The curriculum was considered by the Advisory Board for Health Master's Degree Programmes on xxxx and approved on 28.5.2021 by the Higher Education Council.

Further information

In the studies, students have the opportunity to collaborate with research institutes, companies utilizing genetic information and international research groups.
The studies provide the ability to work in hospital, primary health care, companies and research groups in counseling and research related to genetics and genomic information.
The Master's degree from TAMK provides you with the opportunity to continue onwards to Doctoral studies in other universities.
