Objectives

After successful completion of this course, the student is able to develop, implement and evaluate relevant internationalization strategies for the benefit of growing a business. The student has an in-depth understanding of internationalization and foreign market entry strategies and can critically analyze complex problems associated with a growth company’s internationalization and international expansion. He/she can discuss, critically reflect upon, and evaluate theories and perspectives within the field of internationalization. The student can outline and indicate trends and contemporary challenges regarding the internationalization of growing businesses. The student can analyze and handle practical and relevant problems that growing companies may face when establishing business operations in other countries.

Content

The course covers the following aspects of internationalization strategy
- Internationalization theories
- The international environment including culture, economic, legal, political aspects
- Market selection strategies
- Market entry strategies
- Market entry modes and non-export entry modes
- Product and pricing decisions
- Financing decisions, including methods of payment
- International marketing communications and promotions

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student knows the drivers and effects of globalization for growing businesses and is able to identify some of the opportunities and challenges the internationalization of a business might poses. The student can handle basic operations in global markets. He/she knows the basic principles of internationalizing a firm’s value chain and utilizing value networks.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student has an advanced understanding of the drivers and effects of globalization for growing businesses. He/she is able to capitalize on the opportunities of internationalization for a growing business. The student can handle advanced operations in global markets. He/she knows the basic principles of internationalizing a firm’s value chain and utilizing value networks. The student has knowledge, competencies and skills about how to analyze and handle practical and relevant problems that growing businesses may face when establishing business markets in new countries.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has a comprehensive understanding of the drivers and effects of globalization for growing businesses. He/she can make substantial gains of the opportunities of internationalization for a growing business. The student can plan, implement and evaluate sophisticated operations in global markets. He/she has an extensive understanding of the principles of internationalizing a firm’s value chain and utilizing value networks. The student has in-depth knowledge, significant competencies and skills about how to analyze and handle practical and relevant complex problems that growing businesses may face when establishing business markets in new countries.
