Objectives

The course focuses on developing different workplace communication skills in multicultural environments.
After completing the course, the student:
• can give a professional presentation as an expert in their field.
• can discuss technical topics related to their field and facilitate discussion and participate in negotiations.
• can present typical equipment/systems/processes in their field.
• can describe their education, work, work history, skills, and future plans.
• can express their opinion in negotiations.
• can write typical texts required in their work, e.g. reports.
• can read professional texts and evaluate them critically.
• has a strong command of the professional vocabulary of their field.
• can use relevant tools.

Content

• Different professional communication situations in a multicultural working environment, e.g. presenting, negotiating, and facilitating discussion.
• Authentic professional texts.
• Terminology of the students’ field of study
• Telling about one’s education, work experience, skills and objectives.

Prerequisites

Working English for Engineers or equivalent

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Student
• can give a simple but understandable presentation related to their field.
• pronounces occasionally inaccurately but understandably.
• understands the main points of professional material in their own field.
• manages simple communication situations on professional topics.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Student
• can give a brief but clear presentation related to their field.
• pronounces fairly naturally and clearly.
• understands both the main points and most details in professional materials and can implement the acquired knowledge.
• expresses oneself clearly and professionally
• communicates professionally and expresses situational awareness.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student
• can give an engaging and structured presentation related to their field.
• pronounces clearly and naturally with varying nuances in tone.
• understands both key points and details in professional materials.
• can easily implement acquired knowledge.
• can communicate fluently, accurately and professionally with a strong sense of style and appropriate register.
