Description
Graduates of the Degree Programme in Public Health Nursing are experts of public health nursing, primary health care, public health work and health promotion who implement and develop family-centred public health nursing independently and in multiprofessional work communities. The focus is on health promotion competence in different life phases and mastery of health promotion methods. The Degree Programme in Public Health Nursing offers extensive competence in all fields of public health nursing and use of genomics in health promotion.
The extent of the Degree Programme in Public Health Nursing is 240 credits and it takes four years to complete it. Students first complete nursing studies which are followed by public health nursing studies. Graduates receive a degree certificate on both their nursing and public health nursing degrees. The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health certifies the graduates as registered nurses and public health nurses.
The Degree Programme in Public Health Nursing’s values are based on respect for human dignity and individuals, confidentiality, responsibility and high-quality professional work. Public health nursing is guided by ethical guidelines on public health nursing. Public health nursing graduates can support people in health and wellbeing promotion and maintenance and treat ill people in a holistic manner. They are health promotion experts who implement and develop their work independently and in multiprofessional cooperation. They promote and maintain health of individuals, families, communities, population and environment. It is important to involve people in maintaining and promoting their health. Independent decision-making and good interaction skills are emphasised in the work.
The professional studies in public health nursing strengthen students’ professionalism and especially deepen and extend their health promotion competence. Students can make ethically sound, evidence-based decisions and work professionally.
Public health nursing professionals can work in diverse tasks of primary health care, special health care and third sector as well as independent professionals. The programme also enables work in international tasks. Midwifery professionals can work in different planning and development tasks.
Competence development during studies
The Degree Programme in Public Health Nursing is implemented as full-time studies. The degree programme includes the clinical training required for the public health nursing degree.
After the first semester, students can the basics of nursing ill people. Students know how to follow health care legislation and ethical guidelines on nursing in their work. Students can identify and predict health problems in individuals and communities and know basics of genomics. Students can monitor patients’ vital functions, identify patients’ needs for nursing and use appropriate nursing methods safely. Students can implement pharmacotherapy safely and master medical calculations. Students can consider different cultures in nursing.
During the second, third, fourth and fifth semesters, students develop their clinical competence in different fields of nursing and can determine nursing needs of clients of different ages as well as plan, implement and assess nursing in cooperation with patients/clients and their close relatives. Students base their work on knowledge of different fields of science. Students can guide and support patients/clients in self-care and utilise user-centred wellbeing technology. Students can work as representatives of nursing in multiprofessional cooperation for the benefit of patients/clients. Students can assess their work critically.
The sixth, seventh and eighth semesters consist of public health nursing studies. Students’ nursing competence and skills continue to strengthen but the focus is on development of independent competence in different public health nursing fields. Students can make ethical and evidence-based decisions and work professionally. Students can develop public health nursing and their work responsibly. Students deepen their public health nursing competence during the bachelor’s thesis and development project.
The Degree Programme in Public Health Nursing includes 85 credits of clinical training in genuine client/patient contacts in different nursing environments. The clinical trainings are completed in different fields of nursing.
The Degree Programme in Public Health Nursing includes 5 credits of free-choice studies. Students can complete cross-institutional studies. Students can also extend their competence by participating in different projects during their studies.
The following principles are followed in completing the studies:
Students have to complete 30 credits of first- and second-semester studies before the third semester. The studies have to include pharmacotherapy and medical calculations. Students have to participate in the courses Prevention of Infections, Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations and Basics of Clinical Nursing before the second clinical training.
Students have to pass the courses Prevention of Infections, Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations and Basics of Clinical Nursing before the third clinical training. Students also have to participate in a nursing theory course in a training environment before the clinical trainings 3-7.
Students must have completed 135 credits before beginning their professional studies in public health nursing. The studies must include clinical nursing studies, anatomy and physiology and a minimum of six supervised clinical trainings.
In third- and fourth-year studies, students strengthen their public health nursing competence and especially deepen and extend their health promotion competence among families of different ages and life situations. Students can support families and individuals in different phases of their life (pregnancy, parenthood, couple relationship, health and wellbeing of children, adolescents, adults and working-age people) and support and strengthen healthy modes of living with resource-based methods.
During the public health nursing studies, students learn to work in different operational environments (eg child health clinics, school and student communities, adult counselling, occupational health care, organisations) as preventive health care specialists in multiprofessional teams.
After the fourth year, students can make ethical and evidence-based decisions which promote health together with clients or families and work professionally. Students can work as client counsellors in all phases of the treatment process and develop public health nursing and their work.
Internationalisation
Students can deepen their competence by participating in English-language teaching in Finland, international exchange or other international studies. Students can also complete their supervised clinical trainings in international exchange.
