Public health nursing studies are based on nursing studies, which are included in the degree certificate. The extent of the studies is 240 credits and the education lasts for 4 years.
The title of the graduating students of Public Health Nursing is Bachelor of Health Care.

Basic values of the Degree Programme in Nursing and Health Care are respect for human dignity and individuals, confidentiality, responsibility, and high quality professional conduct.

Public health nurses / registered nurses promote and maintain health of individuals, families, communities, population, and the environment, and nurse patients/clients holistically. Activating people to maintain and contribute to their health is at the centre of public health nursing. Public health nurses are involved in prevention of health risks and illnesses, early intervention and holistic nursing, and planning and development of healthy living and working environments. Independent decision making, good communication skills and empathy are highlighted in public health nursing.

Public health nurses are experts on public health nursing, primary health care, national health work, and health promotion. They implement and develop family centred health care work independently and in multiprofessional collaboration. Public health nurses work in health clinics, school and student health care, adult counselling, hospitals, home care, and health promotion. Public health nurses can also work in occupational health care, associations, and in various educational and project activities and as entrepreneurs.

Public health nurses’ professional competence is made up of ethical conduct, health promotion, decision making in nursing, guidance and teaching, cooperation, research and development, management, multicultural nursing, societal activities, clinical nursing and pharmacotherapy. Family centred health care at various phases of life and health promotion methods are emphasised. The professional competence is based on evidence based nursing and public health nursing, nursing science and other disciplines supporting nursing, such as medicine and social and behavioural sciences.

Learning of public health nursing means reflective, critical and ethical reassessment of prior knowledge and experiences, new ideas, and processing of personal attitudes. The multilevel reality and various forms of knowledge are the bases for learning the essential competences in public health nursing.
