Objectives
The student
- knows the theoretical basics of the surgical procedures used in the care of various surgical patients
- knows the importance of surgery in operative care
- knows the special features of surgical care for elective and emergency patients and the challenges involved in the patient's nursing care
- knows the basics of aseptic actions for the patient's perioperative care
- knows the responsibilities of a perioperative nurse in perioperative nursing care
- is responsible for the theoretical development of his/her own competence
- knows the basics of ethical behaviour related to his/her professional field and applies theoretical knowledge related to different situations
- is able to work collegially and develop as a professional representative by assessing his/her own activities and in giving feedback to team members
- is able to receive collegial feedback on his/her own activities as a team member

- aseptical actions in perioperative nursing
- perioperative nursing in various surgical areas in the work of an instrument nurse and circulating nurse

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student
- is able to take patient safety into consideration in the planning of surgery
- the planning and implementation of a patient’s surgical care enable surgery, in terms of the surgical positioning and immediate surgical preparations
- the planning and implementation of surgery are based on the principles underlying the general application of aseptic practices
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student
- is able to take into account patient safety in the planning of surgical care
- the planning and implementation of the perioperative care enable the surgery from the viewpoint of the particular patient care.
- the planning and implementation of surgery are based on the application of the principles of aseptic practices regarding the particular patient care
- in the implementation of surgical care, the theoretical knowledge of the instrument and circulating nurses is applied in the particular patient care
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
-The student
- considers patient safety in the planning of surgical treatment from the point of view of the particular patient case
- the planning and implementation of perioperative care enable surgery, and the requirements of surgical operations allow the cooperation between medical care and nursing care
- the planning and implementation of surgery are based on the application of the principles of aseptic practices in the particular patient case
- in the implementation of surgical care, the theoretical knowledge of the instrument and circulating nurses is applied, taking into account the activities of other professionals involved in the care of the patient
Further information
At the beginning of the elective vocational studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include theoretical studies of the area which the student has chosen for the elective studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology and minimum six supervised clinical training courses. The required area is Perioperative Nursing. It is recommended that the student has completed the supervised practical in the area of Perioperative Nursing.
