Description
The core values of Degree Programme in Nursing and Health Care, Nursing, include respect for individuals, human dignity, confidentiality, responsibility and high-quality professional conduct. Learning to be a nurse includes both evaluation of prior knowledge and conduct in a reflective, critical and ethical way, realisation of new ways of action, and processing of personal attitudes. The starting point of learning is the multidimensional reality and knowledge of many levels.
Learning rises from the key competence needs of the professional field. The professional competencies of registered nurses have been defined based on national and European standards, and they consist of professionalism and ethics, client-centred care, communication and multi-professionalism, health promotion, leadership and professional co-operation skills of the employee, information technology and documentation, guidance and education competence and supporting self-care, clinical nursing, evidence-based practice, utilization of research knowledge and decision-making, entrepreneurship and development, quality management, service system of health care and social welfare services, and patient and client safety. The professional competencies of registered nurses are based on evidence-based nursing, nursing science and other disciplines such as medicine and social and behavioural sciences. Degree Programme in Nursing and Health Care, Nursing, includes the following competences in addition to the previously mentioned: competences in genome data, individualised care, digital communication skills, utilisation of digital solutions, wellbeing technology and principles of service occupation. The student will recognise and utilize the principles of sustainable development in the profession. At Tampere University of Applied Sciences, the degree programme in nursing has a strong profile in demanding clinical nursing and individualised health promotion.
The registered nurse supports people in health and wellbeing promotion and maintenance of health, and cares for the ill in a holistic way. The nurse is an expert who carries out and develops nursing independently and in multi-professional teams. The registered nurse can work in different environments in social and health care, in the service of primary health care, specialised health care, private sector or third sector organisations.
The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health authorises Bachelor of Health Care degrees according to the Act on Health Care Professionals (559/94). The degree is comparable with equivalent degrees in other EU countries (2013/55/EU).
Content and progress of studies:
The studies are structured in three phases, and the student’s competence in nursing expands and deepens throughout the studies.
60 credits of studies should be completed in a year. In Degree Programme in Nursing and Health Care, Nursing, the studies are carried out in Finnish, part of the studies can be in English.
After the first semester of the studies, the core studies, the nursing student knows the basics of caring for ill patients. The student obeys legislation and ethical codes concerning health care. The student recognises and predicts possible health problems of individuals and communities and knows the basic principles of genome data. The student knows how to monitor basic vital signs, recognise nursing needs and use appropriate nursing methods. The student has mastered medical calculations and knows how to administer medication safely. The student is able to consider the meaning of different cultures in nursing.
During the mid-phase studies, second, third, fourth and fifth semester of the studies the student develops his/her clinical competence in different areas of nursing. The student can estimate the nursing needs of patients/clients of different ages, and plan, implement and evaluate nursing in cooperation with the patients/clients and their significant others. The student utilizes multidisciplinary knowledge as the basis for his/her work. The student can guide and support patients/clients in self-care and utilize user-oriented wellbeing technology. The student knows how to act in multi-professional collaboration to the benefit of the patient/client. The student can critically evaluate his/her own work.
During sixth and seventh semester, in the advanced professional studies, the competence of the student strengthens and deepens. The student can make ethically sound decisions based on evidence and act professionally. The student can meet the nursing needs of families and patients of different ages in the chosen nursing field. The student can act as a primary nurse to patients and their families throughout nursing processes according to the principles of primary nursing. The student can develop nursing and his/her conduct responsibly. The student deepens his/her knowledge in a nursing field through the bachelor’s thesis.
Degree Programme in Nursing and Health Care, Nursing includes 75 credits of supervised clinical training to enhance professional skills. Clinical trainings are situated in real patient/client contacts, extensively in different nursing specialities and health care environments.
Degree Programme in Nursing and Health Care, Nursing includes 5 credits of free elective studies. The student has the right for cross-institutional studies and can broaden the competence and know-how by participating in different projects during the studies.
In completing the studies, the following principles are followed:
30 credits of first and second semester studies need to be completed before starting third semester studies. These 30 credits should include passed course Pharmacotherapy and medical calculations.
Before second clinical training the student should participate in the courses Infection control, Pharmacotherapy and medical calculations and Basics of clinical nursing.
The student must have passed courses Infection control, Pharmacotherapy and medical calculations and Basics of clinical nursing before third clinical training. In addition to this, before clinical trainings 3-7 the student must participate in the courses related to the nursing area of the supervised clinical training (e.g. before surgical nursing clinical training the student must participate in surgical nursing course).
Supervised clinical trainings 2-9 in Degree Programme in Nursing and Health Care, Nursing, should be planned and placed extensively in different fields of nursing care. The student will have clinical trainings with patients and clients of all ages in the basic health care, specialised care, inpatient and outpatient care (in public and private health care and third sector). The student will develop competence in general nursing and mental health and substance abuse nursing care.
By the start of sixth semester, before the advanced professional studies the student must have 135 credits of studies completed, including anatomy and physiology and at least six supervised clinical trainings.
Before Bachelor's Thesis the student has participated in the courses Structured Data Search and Nursing Research. The student has completed Supervised Clinical Training 1-3.
Internationalisation
The student will have the opportunity to deepen international competence during the studies. The student can take part in the English language theoretical studies in Finland or during international study exchange, he/she can participate in other international studies, and can take part in international trainee exchange.
