Objectives

In supervised clinical training, you will learn postpartum midwifery care.
The supervised clinical training course provides the bascis for caring for postpartum families and newborns
After completing the course, the student
• demonstrates under supervision skills to assess the needs of care and plan, implement and evaluate care of women given birth and newborn babies
• is capable of identifying and defining the fundamental concepts related to postpartum midwifery care, as well as recognizing their knowledge gaps and actively seeking information
• gains experience in the care pathway of a postpartum mother and newborn, including discharge planning and continued care
• knows the infection control principles and practices aseptically
• is able to safely manage the patient's medication and fluid therapy under supervision
• meets the patients and work group members respectfully
• is able to guide the mothers and their families in the breastfeeding, self-care and the basic care of newborn baby
• aims to promote patients’ wellbeing and is acting safely
• adheres to the ethical guidelines and principles of nursing, acts responsibly and recognises the limits of their expertise
• follows the confidentiality and data protection guidelines
• follows the agreed rules of supervised practical training in their actions
• evaluates their own competence realistically and is able to give and receive feedback
• is able to operate in accordance with the principles of sustainable development

Content

Postpartum midwifery care for mothers and newborns

Prerequisites

The student has participated in the following courses:
Reproductive Health and Gynecological Nursing and Breastfeeding Counselling
Nursing of Children, Young People and Nursing of the Disabled

Passed
The student
• has basic knowledge and clinical skills in the care of postpartum mothers and newborns, recognizes their own knowledge gaps, and actively seeks information
• knows the care path of women given birth and newborn babies
• knows the infection control principles and practices aseptically
• is able to safely manage the patient's medication and fluid therapy under supervision
• meets the patients and work group members respectfully
• is able to guide the mothers and their families in the breastfeeding, self-care and the basic care of newborn baby
• aims to promote patients’ wellbeing and is acting safely
• acts responsibly and recognises the limits of their own expertise
• follows the confidentiality and data protection guidelines
• follows the agreed rules of supervised practical training in their actions
• evaluates their own competence realistically and is able to give and receive feedback
• acts in accordance with the principles of sustainable development

Failed
Student
• there are obvious shortcomings in basic knowledge about postnatal midwifery; searching for and utilising knowledge is incomplete, and even after a tutorial discussion there are misunderstandings in the theoretical knowledge.
• does not know the care path of women given birth and newborn babies
• does not know the infection control principles and does not practice aseptically
• makes mistakes in the patient's medicine and fluid therapy despite being supervised
• does not meet the patients and work group members respectfully and professionally
• is not able to guide the mothers and their families in the breastfeeding, self-care and the basic care of newborn baby
• does not recognize the boundaries of their own expertise, endangering patient safety
• violates confidentiality or patient privacy
• fails to follow the agreed rules for supervised practice (e.g., takes no responsibility for their own learning; the goals are missing; does not follow the working hours, does not report their absences, and/or the total amount of required hours is not fulfilled)
• evaluates own competence unrealistically and is unable to receive feedback
