Objectives

After completing the course, the student will know the key surgical diseases and cancers, along with their medical management, anesthesiology, as well as the fundamentals of radiation protection and imaging.

After completing the course, the student

Surgery and anesthesiology
• Knows the epidemiology of the most common surgically treatable diseases and cancers.
• Knows the genetic background of the most common surgically treatable diseases and cancers and recognizes the impact of genomic information on disease management, as well as knowing about risk factors and their prevention.
• Can identify the symptoms of the most common surgically treatable diseases and cancers and knows the key clinical, radiological, and clinical-physiological investigations.
• Knows the treatment modalities, follow-up, monitoring, and prognosis of the most common surgical diseases and cancers.
• Knows the surgical patient care pathway from referral to postoperative follow-up.
• Knows the necessary pre-procedural investigations in selecting the anesthesia mode, their findings, and their effects on treatment planning.
• Knows the forms of premedication for anesthesia and their effects, as well as the most common anesthesia agents and forms, and postoperative pain management.
• Knows how to act in acute life-threatening situations related to anesthesia.

Radiation protection and imaging
• The basics of different imaging examinations, safety, and radiation protection.
• The basics of radiation physics and radiation biology.
• General principles of radiation protection in medical exposure.
• Radiation protection for workers.
• Legislation related to medical use of radiation.

Content

Surgery and anesthesiology
• The key general surgical, gastroenterological, urological, orthopedic, and trauma diseases, as well as surgical cancers: fundamentals of disease etiology, pathophysiology, genetics, prevention, symptoms, investigations and findings, treatment, and follow-up.
• The key factors influencing the selection and implementation of anesthesia, common anesthesia methods, preoperative preparations, factors related to anesthesia implementation, perioperative monitoring, and pain management.

Radiation protection and imaging
• The basics of different imaging examinations, safety and radiation protection
• The basics of radiation physics and radiation biology
• General principles of radiation protection in medical exposure
• Radiation protection for workers
• Legislation related to medical use of radiation

Prerequisites

30 ects of first year studies completed, including Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Surgery and anesthesiology

Pass
The student
• Understands the genetic basis, prevalence, risk factors, and prevention possibilities of common surgically treated diseases and oncological conditions.
• Knows the symptoms, investigations, and findings of common surgically treated diseases and oncological conditions in relation to the stage of the disease.
• Knows the treatment modalities and monitoring of common surgically treated diseases and oncological conditions.
• Understands aspects related to assessing patient's suitability for surgery, induction and maintenance of anesthesia, and patient emergence.
• Knows the premedication for anesthesia, basic anesthesia techniques, as well as indications for spinal and epidural anesthesia, acute reactions they may cause, and their management.
• Understands the fundamental principles of pain management in surgical patients.

Fail

The student
• Is unaware of the genetic basis, prevalence, risk factors, or prevention possibilities of common surgically treated diseases and oncological conditions.
• Does not know the symptoms, investigations, or findings of common surgically treated diseases and oncological conditions in relation to the stage of the disease.
• Lacks knowledge of the treatment modalities or monitoring of common surgically treated diseases and oncological conditions.
• Does not know about assessing patient's suitability for surgery, induction and maintenance of anesthesia, or patient emergence.
• Is unfamiliar with premedication for anesthesia, basic anesthesia techniques, indications for spinal and epidural anesthesia, or acute reactions they may cause, and their management.
• Does not know the fundamental principles of pain management in surgical patients.

Radiation protection and imaging

Fail
The student
• The basics of various imaging examination, related safety issues, or radiation protection from the point of view of nursing.
• The grounds for medical exposure and occupational exposure.
• Issues related to the quality, quantity, or magnitude of radiation exposure.
• The principles of radiation protection or is unable to apply them in practice.
