Objectives

The course provides a basic knowledge of surgical nursing.

On completion of the course, the student
• Knows the steps of the surgical patient care pathway.
• Recognises the impact surgically treated diseases have on the patient’s health, functional ability in everyday life, and the guidance needs of the patient and their family.
• Identifies the care needs of the surgical patient and is able to plan, implement and evaluate pre- and post-operative nursing care.
• Utilises theoretical knowledge to select the main methods of assistance in the care of the surgical patient.
• Understands the role of the nurse as part of the multidisciplinary care team looking after the surgical patient.
• Is able to document and communicate verbally to ensure continuity of care for the surgical patient.

Content

• The various care pathways of surgical patients and continuity of care.
• The impact of surgically treated conditions on the patient's health, functional ability and the patient’s family.
• The multidisciplinary approach to pre- and post-operative care of the surgical patient.
• Providing guidance to the surgical patient and the patient's family.
• specific aspects of medicine and fluid management in surgical nursing.

Prerequisites

30 ects of first year studies completed, including Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations. Participation in course Intravenous Fluid Therapy and Clinical Laboratory Tests.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student
• Identify the different care pathways of surgical patients.
• Identify the impact of surgical conditions on the patient's health, their ability to cope with everyday life and the patient's family.
• Recognise the need for guidance of the surgical patient and his/her family members.
• Identify the care needs of the surgical patient and know how to plan, implement and evaluate pre- and post-operative nursing care.
• Identify the main methods of assistance in the care of the surgical patient.
• Recognise the role of the nurse as part of the multidisciplinary care of the surgical patient.
• Recognise the importance of documentation and verbal communication in ensuring continuity of care for the surgical patient.
• Recognise the specificities of medication and fluid management in surgical nursing and accurately complete medical calculations.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student

• Knows the impact of surgical conditions on the patient's health, their ability to cope with everyday life and the patient's family.
• Recognise the need for guidance of the surgical patient and his/her family members.
• Identify the care needs of the surgical patient and know how to plan, implement and evaluate pre- and post-operative nursing care.

• Understands the role of the nurse as part of the multidisciplinary care team of the surgical patient.
• Understands the importance of documentation and verbal communication in ensuring continuity of care for the surgical patient.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• Know the different care pathways of surgical patients.
• Understand the impact of surgical conditions on the patient's health, their ability to cope with everyday life and the patient's family, and is able to utlise this information to support the patient.
• Is able to assess the need for guidance of the surgical patient and his/her family members.
• Is able to assess the care needs of the surgical patient and know how to plan, implement and evaluate pre- and post-operative nursing care.
• Can apply the main methods of assistance in the care of the surgical patient.
• Is able to operate in the role of the nurse as part of the multidisciplinary care of the surgical patient.
• Is able to document and verbally communicate to ensure continuity of care for the surgical patient.
• Is able to apply the specificities of medication and fluid management in surgical nursing and accurately complete medical calculations.
