Objectives
In this course you will learn the basics of reproductive health and gynecological nursing.
The course provides the skills to promote sexual and reproductive health as a nurse and care for gynecological clients and patients.
In the breastfeeding counsellor training, you will be prepared for baby-friendly work, breastfeeding guidance, breastfeeding protection and dialogical interaction in breastfeeding guidance. The training is an official breastfeeding instructor training and is based on the WHO and Unicef.
After completing the course, the student
• knows the basics of promoting sexual and reproductive health and protecting fertility
• knows the most common issues in gynecological nursing and knows the related examinations and care
• knows the normal process and care of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period and knows the most common complications in them
• knows the structure and process of the maternity care service system
• knows how to guide families in newborn basic care
• recognizes the ethical principles in reproductive health and gynecological nursing and knows how to act according to them
• knows basics of medical care during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum period and gynecological care
• understands the baby-friendly work and breastfeeding protection
• gains the skills for dialogical interaction in breastfeeding guidance
• understands the continuum of breastfeeding guidance from pregnancy to the postnatal period
• is able to guide families based on the evidence in the matters related to breastfeeding during pregnancy, after childbirth and during infancy
• identifies the challenges related to the breastfeeding and knows how to act in order to solve them
• understands the importance of the continuous professional support in promoting breastfeeding
Content

• promoting sexual and reproductive health and protecting fertility
• the structure of the maternity care service system
• normal pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period and most common disorders
• early pregnancy complications, pregnancy termination and infertility
• the most common gynecological conditions and their care
• medical care in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and gynecology
• assisting in gynecological and breast examination
• assisting in out-of-hospital childbirth
• parental guidance in the daily care, nutrition and observation of the newborn
• Baby Friendliness Programme and WHO/UNICEF Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding
• interaction skills in the breastfeeding guidance
• the physiology of breastfeeding
• the protection of breastfeeding and practices supporting the breastfeeding
• breastfeeding guidance during pregnancy and after the birth of a child.
• assisting with breastfeeding and related challenging situations
• the criteria for the amount of milk and giving additional milk and the reduction of additional milks
• the effect of the health of the nursing mother and a newborn on breastfeeding
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student:
• identifies the basics of sexual and reproductive health and fertility protection
• identifies the normal course and monitoring of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period, and knows the most common disorders during pregnancy and postpartum period
• knows the structure and process of the maternity care service system
• has limited capacity to guide families in breastfeeding, basic newborn care and monitoring
• superficially identifies ethical problems in reproductive health and gynecological nursing
• knows the basics of pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum period and gynecological medication care
• knows the most common gynecological diseases and related examinations and treatments
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student:
• knows the basics of sexual and reproductive health and fertility protection
• knows the normal course and monitoring of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period, and knows the most common disorders during pregnancy and postpartum period
• knows the structure and process of the maternity care service system
• is capable to guide families in breastfeeding, basic newborn care and monitoring

• participates actively in lessons
