Objectives

During the course, you will learn about the most common high-risk pregnancies and their etiology. The course will equip you to identify high-risk pregnancies, provide evidence-based management and consider the ethical aspects of the care.
After completing this course, the student
• knows the most common high-risk pregnancies and their etiology.
• knows the impact of risk factors on fertility, pregnancy planning, and pregnancy.
• knows midwifery care knowledge and skills in pregnancy disorders, high-risk pregnancies and their identification, screening, monitoring, and care in theory.
• has comprehensive knowledge and skills to independently care for high-risk pregnancies and high-risk births as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• knows medication treatment principles of high-risk pregnancies.

Content

• etiology of high-risk pregnancies, e.g. ageing, health behavior, epigenetic influence
• risk factors in pregnancy and fertility as well as pregnancy planning
• treatment and monitoring of individuals with high-risk pregnancy
• high-risk obstetric care
• psychosocial problems
• intimate partner violence
• fear of childbirth
• multidisciplinary cooperation
• ethical issues

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Student
• is able to describe the most common high-risk pregnancies, complications during pregnancy, and the monitoring and care of them.
• understands the etiology of high-risk pregnancies.
• has basic knowledge of taking care of high-risk pregnancies as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• has basic knowledge of ethical issues in midwifery.
• is able to perform medical calculations correctly and has basic knowledge of medication treatment during a high-risk pregnancy

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Student
• is able to describe and recognize in detail the most common high-risk pregnancies and complications during pregnancy, and the monitoring and the evidence-based care of them.
• understands the etiology of high-risk pregnancies.
• has comprehensive knowledge to independently care for high-risk pregnancies and high-risk births as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• is able to define and reflect on ethical aspects in midwifery care based on scientific evidence and ethical guidelines.
• is able to perform medical calculations correctly and has basic knowledge of medication treatment during a high-risk pregnancy

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

• masters the theoretical knowledge of midwifery care in identifying, observing and caring of individuals with high-risk pregnancies and pregnancy disorders.
• understands the etiology of high-risk pregnancies.
• knows evidence-based knowledge of high-risk pregnancies and is able to apply this in clinical midwifery care.
• is able to independently care for high-risk pregnancies and high-risk births as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• is able to describe monitoring methods of women and infants during a high-risk pregnancy.
• is able to reflect and solve ethical issues in midwifery care based on scientific evidence and ethical guidelines.
